Examination of Conscience By Fr. Augustine H.T. Tran

1. Heavenly Father, You made me to know You, to love You, and to serve You in this world

that I may be happy with You forever in Heaven. And Your Son taught me that I cannot serve

two masters. When I break your commandments, I am serving a master other than You. Hence,

I fail daily in loving and serving You. St. Paul reminds me that You will bring to light what is

hidden in darkness and will manifest the motives of my heart (cf. 1 Cor 4:5), so, now, I manifest

my conscience to you. For the psalmist reminds me that when I confess my faults to You, You

take away the guilt of my sin. So, I beseech You, Lord, be my rock and refuge; may my soul

rest in You alone.

2. Heavenly Father, You taught me to love and serve You by not worshipping other gods

before You. So, for the times I performed my duties towards You reluctantly or grudgingly, for

the times I placed money, power, human respect, and material goods before love of You, for

the times I seriously believed in superstition or engaged in superstitious practices, for the times

I seriously doubted in matters of faith, for the times I endangered my faith through curiosity

with the occult, for the times I profaned sacred persons, places, or things, and for the times I

received Holy Communion in a state of mortal sin, I beg Your pardon and forgiveness; because

in all those times I did not love and serve You. Lord, be my rock and refuge; may my soul rest

in You alone.

3. Heavenly Father, You taught me to love and serve You by not taking Your name in vain. So,

for the times I called out Your name without cause, for the times I mockingly, jokingly, angrily,

or otherwise irreverently used Your name, for the times I cursed or provoked others to curse,

for the times I told a lie under oath, and for the times I broke private or public vows, I beg Your

pardon and forgiveness; because in all those times I did not love and serve You. Lord, be my

rock and refuge; may my soul rest in You alone.

4. Heavenly Father, You taught me to love and serve You by keeping holy the Sabbath day.

So, for the times I missed Mass on Sundays or Holy days of obligation through my own fault,

for the times I allowed myself to be distracted during Mass, for the times I misbehaved or

dressed improperly in church, causing others to be distracted during Mass, for the times I

arrived late or left early from Mass, and for the times I did unnecessary work on Sundays and

Holy days of obligation, I beg Your pardon and forgiveness; because in all those times I did not

love and serve You. Lord, be my rock and refuge; may my soul rest in You alone.

5. Heavenly Father, You taught me to love and serve You by honoring my mother and my

father. So, for the times I disobeyed my parents, for the times I neglected to help them in their

needs, for the times I treated my parents with little affection or respect, for the times I reacted

proudly when they corrected me, for the times I neglected my chores around the house, and

for the times I quarreled with my brothers and sisters, I beg Your pardon and forgiveness;

because in all those times I did not love and serve You. Lord, be my rock and refuge; may my

soul rest in You alone.

6. But Lord, not only am I someone’s child, I am also someone’s parent. So, for the times I

neglected to teach my children their prayers or take them to church, for the times I was a bad

example to my children, for the times I neglected to prepare them to properly receive First

Confession, First Communion, and Confirmation, and for the times I neglected their Christian

education after Confirmation, I beg Your pardon and forgiveness; because in all those times I

did not love and serve You. Lord, be my rock and refuge; may my soul rest in You alone.

7. Heavenly Father, You taught me to love and serve You by not murdering. So, for the times I

lost my temper, for the times I injured or took the life of an innocent person, for the times I

endangered lives by my reckless driving, for the times I led others into temptation with my

conversation or way of dressing, for the times I got drunk or used prohibited drugs, for the

times I ate or drank to excess, for the times I consented to, recommended, advised, or actively

took part in an abortion or a direct sterilization, for the times I caused anyone harm with my

words or actions, and for the times I insulted or teased others, I beg Your pardon and

forgiveness; because in all those times I did not love and serve You. Lord, be my rock and

refuge; may my soul rest in You alone.

8. Heavenly Father, You taught me to love and serve You by not committing adultery or

coveting my neighbor’s wife. So, for the times I entertained indecent thoughts, for the times I

engaged in impure conversations, for the times I put myself in proximate occasions of sin, for

the times I did not take care of those details of modesty and decency that are the safeguards

of purity, for the times I committed impure acts with someone else or with myself, for the times

I put the person I love in danger of sinning, for the times I degraded human love by confusing it

with selfishness or pleasure, and for the times I made improper use of marriage by either

depriving my spouse of the marital right or by using artificial forms of birth control, I beg Your

pardon and forgiveness; because in all those times I did not love and serve You. Lord, be my

rock and refuge; may my soul rest in You alone.

9. Heavenly Father, You taught me to love and serve You by not stealing or coveting my

neighbor’s goods. So, for the times I stole, for the times I damaged others’ property, for the

times I did harm by deception or fraud, for the times I spent beyond my means, for the times I

neglected to tithe, for the times I was lazy in my work or study, and for the times I was greedy

and excessively materialistic, I beg Your pardon and forgiveness; because in all those times I

did not love and serve You. Lord, be my rock and refuge; may my soul rest in You alone.

10. Heavenly Father, You taught me to love and serve You by not bearing false witness against

my neighbor. So, for the times I lied, for the times I made derogatory remarks about others, for

the times I judged others rashly or suspected others falsely, for the times I engaged in gossip

or back-biting, for the times I spoke about the faults of others without necessity, and for the

times I willfully chose not to mention all my mortal sins in confession, I beg Your pardon and

forgiveness; because in all those times I did not love and serve You. Lord, be my rock and

refuge; may my soul rest in You alone.

11. If you wish, Lord, you can cleanse me from all my sins through the sacrament of

forgiveness that Your Son left us; for from You comes my hope and my salvation (cf. Ps 62:2-

7).
