- Fasting – Deepen Your Relationship with God
Fasting – Deepen Your Relationship with God Photo by Kamil Szumotalski on Unsplash St. John Chrysostom, an influential Christian theologian and Archbishop of Constantinople in the 4th century, wrote extensively on the spiritual practice of fasting. In his work "On Fasting," he emphasized the importance of self-discipline and moderation in one's diet as a means to purify the soul and draw closer to God. Chrysostom believed that excessive indulgence in food led to a lack of control over one's desires and emotions, ultimately hindering spiritual growth. He viewed fasting as a way to cultivate virtues such as humility, charity, and prayerfulness while also strengthening one's relationship with God. Through his theological writings and sermons, St. John Chrysostom encouraged believers to embrace fasting as a powerful tool for personal transformation and spiritual renewal, highlighting its role in fostering inner peace and deepening one's faith journey. St. John Chrysostom | Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=332744 During this Lenten season, may we imitate St. John Chrysostom’s example of modesty in diet and detachment from worldly pleasures in order to live more authentically Catholic lives and deepen our relationship with God.

Exciting Curriculum Updates & Enhancements for RCA Students! Math 8/7 students at the Regina Caeli Omaha Center In Math 8/7 use math manipulatives as a key strategy to help develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. We’re working hard to make sure the rest of this academic year, as well as the next year, are smooth for all of our students, families, and staff. In addition to what we shared in the introductory letter, here are some highlights: Need a summary of the updates to curriculum this year and what we’re working on for next year? Here’s the letter we sent out when we broadcasted our updated accommodations and academic policies for next year. We have a fabulous team of 78A/B tutors updating writing assignments in 78A and 78B in a way that will help our middle schoolers become better writers and, even more, love writing. We’re using the Seton Composition for Young Catholics as a backbone for both years, and students will practice the skills they learn in their History and Theology writing assignments! In addition to improved writing process instruction, our middle schoolers will get a more interactive experience with Shakespeare as we shift the Shakespeare reading to center days in order to capitalize on the drama! Instead of reading Shakespeare on their own, students will encounter the stories, the language, and way in which humanity is portrayed in a whole-class setting, setting the stage for great discussions and probably a laugh or two! For a sneak peek at how we’ll bring the Bard more fully into our classroom spaces, give a listen to the Living Shakespeare resources, available digitally here ! We’re looking forward to partnering with tutors, parents, and other RCA team members in the near future as we take a closer look at our lower and middle school Latin curriculum and ways we can better serve our families and staff. Be on the lookout for ways you can get involved; we’ll be reaching out soon! Here’s one of our new training videos for returning staff next year; as we partner with you on your children’s educational journey, I invite you to give it a watch or listen to learn more about the history of classical education, how the traditional philosophy of educating young minds was challenged by Enlightenment and modern thinkers, and how RCA’s work is helping to bring about the renewal of a proven, faith-based, whole-person approach to education! As we continue striving for excellence in classical education, we’re excited about these updates and the positive impact they will have on our students, families, and staff. Your support and engagement are invaluable as we work together to enhance our curriculum and learning experiences. Stay tuned for more updates, and thank you for being part of the RCA community! March 2025 | Online Newsletter The Regina Report Dear RCA Families, It’s hard to believe that the end of this academic year is in sight! Over in Curriculum, the team has been busy preparing for next year by writing lesson plans for Logic of English, optimizing the booklist so that it functions better for our admin and families alike, and working with our stellar tutors to update grade level- and subject-specific training videos. We are excited to host a Logic of English: Foundations B webinar early next month for parents of incoming 1st-3rd graders, so stay tuned for more information on when and where to join us for this informative session! While we write the Logic of English lesson plans, we are also drafting the standards for K-2 Language Arts and Abeka Math standards-based grades. By breaking learning into distinct areas, these standards will help us provide families with a clear picture of their students’ mastery of specific skills. In addition to the hustle and bustle of content planning for next year, we are meeting once a month with our Mentor Tutors, who are reading through G.K. Chesterton’s The Man Who Was Called Thursday. Our sessions mirror what our tutors do in the classroom when they lead Socratic seminar discussions, so we like to think of it as an immersive professional development opportunity! We hope to offer studies like this for a broader audience in the very near future as a way to support not only our staff, but also our families and anyone else who desires to dig into the richness of good literature and riveting discussions. As we look ahead to the end of the semester and the summer months, our team will shift gears to focus on the logistical updates needed to better organize courses and prepare tutors, families, and students alike for success during the 2025-2026 academic year. We are excited to streamline documents by providing a syllabus for each grade level and/or subject. This will make lesson plans more straightforward, as overarching course information will be organized within the syllabus. Lastly, we adjusted our CLT schedule so that the early September test date is optional for both 11th and 12th graders, while 11th graders will take the CLT during the latter half of the second semester. This allows our 11th graders to encounter the test after they have covered a majority of the year’s lessons, which will better prepare them for confident execution of the CLT! This also better suits college application windows, which often open in the summer (or sooner) for early admissions. We will keep the September test date as an option for any students who wish to get early exposure to the test as an 11th grader, or those who desire one more shot at the exam before submitting their final college application materials in 12th grade. If you have questions about the CLT for any grades, please let us know! We’ll be reaching out to parents of incoming 11th and 12th graders to begin assessing interest levels for the September exam, since we will need to order those right when the new academic year begins. We are so grateful to be doing this work for our students, families, and staff. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns! Classroom work such as narration, picture study, presentation, and oral and written persuasion show the interconnectedness of all knowledge through the contemplation of the True, the Good, and the Beautiful. Classical education based on the trivium, integrated classical books, art and music, and idea-focused instruction provides students with the foundation to live a principled life and is proven to cultivate wisdom and virtue so that the love of God may abound more and more.
